Practice Connection

Our minds are useful servants and bad masters, as has been said many times before. They were not designed to be put in charge but put them in charge, we have.
This is not a bad thing and there is no reason to judge ourselves if we are mind-dominated and ruled. It’s something to be aware of. And it’s something that can change and will, if you give it space to.
Minds were designed to execute the will of the heart. They help plot the way, after the way has been decided on. That’s their proper and ideal use.
But what do we do? We listen to the mind’s chatter. Treat it as real. Then we fill it up with the mind’s chatter of others and the world’s via various information sources. All of a sudden, we are having opinions, retreating into factions, wanting to go to war, getting irritated and upset, and so on.
This is an invitation to pause and reflect.
Are my thoughts true? Can I believe them? Are they aligned with my innermost feelings? Are they leading me, or am I leading them?
Meditation and similar practices help to break the trance from getting caught in the thought rip tide. You can get lost in there, totally lost. Some of your worst enemies are simply victims of believing their own thoughts, and acting on them as if they were true.
When we meditate, we can create distance between the mind’s incessant chatter and the silence of who we really are — a witnessing, loving consciousness having a human experience in this world.
That’s one way. Another is through nature because nature lives outside of thought, time, and space and so is vibrantly present and nurturing. In nature, we melt. The mind slows down and space is created for a deeper, more harmonious experience to arise.
Connecting with others is yet another way. Awakened conversation, real listening, truthful sharing. Watch how your worries dissolve, right along with your opinions and judgments. What was I so upset about?
Anytime we get stuck in a stressful emotion, it is because we are stuck on a particular thought we believe is so very, very true. Our consciousness narrows and shrinks, as if you were trying to fit it into a small, contained bottle.
Be free. Let go of the thinking by understanding it’s not real. What is real that comes, stays, and goes? Anything that comes, stays, and goes is more like an apparition — an illusion. Treat it as such, with a level of detachment.
(Yes, it’s easier said than done, especially in chronic cases of stressful thinking, which could indicate the need for professional assistance.)
You stay. You are fixed in the now, with every other sentient being. This will never change. And it is there we want to place our focus and awareness. Use your breath, use your body, use the rhythm of your heart to guide you there.
It’s a practice. We find ourselves, and get lost. Find ourselves again, and get lost. And and on, until we finally get it. 🙏🏻
