The aspirant will be forced to dispense with the ego’s insistence on linear trajectories.

The ego feels safe knowing, “If I do this, then that happens.” It gets a sense of control and supremacy from this algorithm.

Expectation creates calcification. “He didn’t call me back, that must mean I’m unlovable.”

Suffering ensues and all manner of coping strategies.

Life continually throws curve balls — by nature, it follows a nonlinear trajectory (if you can call it that). You think things are going up, then they suddenly go down. You get what you want, only to have it removed a few days later. And so on.

This seeming chaos is like death to the ego. Entire social structures have been built to prevent such discomfort.

We are totally out of control. Do you know with absolute certainty what comes next? Nobody does.

And in this realization, we find a type of control in the practice of surrender to what shows up.

What shows up is reality. Is truth.

Truth is the only thing you can trust.

Say goodbye to expectation, and say hello to what is happening in your life — right now.

All of it is a gift, whatever it is. If you don’t see it now, you will come to see it later.
